What this day is
The month of Shravana, opening the day after Guru Purnima, is the most sacred stretch of the year for Shiva devotion. Its Mondays, Sawan Somvar, are kept as fast days across North India and the diaspora.
How families observe it at home
Many family members keep a Monday fast through the month (one meal, or fruit and milk), offer water to Shiva each Monday morning, and eat vegetarian for the whole month. It is a gentle, sustained observance rather than a single feast day.
