Krishna's birth at midnight in Mathura's prison, kept on the eighth night of the waning moon of Bhadrapada. It is the year's most beloved night vigil.
How families observe it at home
Families fast until midnight if they can (children exempt), decorate a small cradle or jhula for baby Krishna, sing bhajans in the evening, and mark the midnight birth with aarti and makhan-mishri. Little footprints walked in from the door to the altar delight children.
