Sacred Thread (Upanayana)

A blessing for the day the Gayatri is received.

For families who celebrate the thread ceremony, it is the day of days: the child receives the yajnopavita and, with it, the Gayatri, the verse that will be theirs for life. This blessing marks that receiving with the very words the day exists to give.

The prayer at its heart

Word for word, the way it has always been said. Their name goes at its head, and your words travel with it. The Sanskrit never arrives alone: a transliteration, so anyone can say it aloud, and its meaning in plain English.

Gāyatrī: The Verse the Thread Carries

ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः । तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि । धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥

oṁ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ | tat savitur vareṇyaṁ bhargo devasya dhīmahi | dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt ||

May we meditate on the radiant light of the life-giving Sun; may that brilliance awaken our understanding. The verse first taught at the thread ceremony itself: the day this prayer becomes the child's own.
