Naming Day (Namkaran)

A welcome prayer on the day the name is given.

On the day a child receives their name, the family speaks it aloud for the first time as a blessing: namakarana, the naming. There could be no better fit for a keepsake built around a name. This blessing welcomes the child on the very day the name is given.

The prayer at its heart

Word for word, the way it has always been said. Their name goes at its head, and your words travel with it. The Sanskrit never arrives alone: a transliteration, so anyone can say it aloud, and its meaning in plain English.

Ā No Bhadrāḥ: Let Noble Thoughts Come

आ नो भद्राः क्रतवो यन्तु विश्वतः ।

ā no bhadrāḥ kratavo yantu viśvataḥ |

Let noble thoughts come to us from every side. The opening line of the hymn, spoken over a child on the day the name is given: the first wish made in that name.
